CNN reports that 50% of the jobs in the US could be replaced by robots and software by 2025. Two years ago Gartner forecast that one-third of jobs will be replaced by automated systems. Although these predictions are drastic they are not surprising. Hardware and software costs continue to drop significantly, while advances in computing grow.
The blockchain, the secure decentralized public-ledger technology, has proven that distributed public ledgers can be trusted. Eduardo Castelló Ferrer makes a compelling proposal that public ledgers could be used to share information across distributes groups of automated systems. These groups of automated systems would both contribute and consume information, enable massive collective decision-making, mimicking swarm behavior. Robotic swarms could be very powerful.
“The combination of blockchain with other distributed systems, such as robotic swarm systems, can provide the necessary capabilities to make robotic swarm operations more secure, autonomous, flexible and even profitable.”
Autonomous Decision Making
These swarms could use this technology to organize, come to agreement and make decisions without a central authority.
